A Non-Existing World

“People are small, and most don’t matter; therefore, they should be concerned with bettering their corner of the world and nothing larger." This quote to me is quite outlanish considering the fact that people make this world go round. Our world, economy, and life itself would not be possible if it were not for the major influences people have had everywhere. If only bettered our own corners of the world, the world would not be as remarkable as it is today. For instance, national organizations would be impossible and have hardly any money, the stock market would crash completely, businesses would fail miserably, and life as we know it would not exist. For example, I have hopes of becoming a surgeon one day and according to this quote I would not matter and should only be concerned with helping my general area. For one, thousands even millions of more people would die every year without of the help of doctors and surgeons alike.

Small People

i think this quote is completely untrue. The reason i believe this is there are some "small people" that have done entirely great things for the world. Take Bill Gates for example, not only is he a multi millionaire but he created a worldwide corporation that has broadened the communications and expanded many companies. Without Microsoft how different would school be? Can you imagine not having to type your papers or not being able to make a power point. Another person who was just one person is martin Luther King Junior and wow has he made a huge impact on the black community along side with Rosa Parks. If they just stayed in their little corner of the world where would we be today? i can tell you for sure we wouldnt have a black president. Although those are a few prime examples of people who made a huge differences there are many people who are small in the aspect they dont branch out much or do much for other people. I dont find this necessarily bad. When i was a little girl i always felt bad for the homeless people and always tried to buy them stuff and then one day a cashier i was buying stuff for him from told me if everyone just took care of them and their own then no one would be in that situation. Although i find that mostly crap i can see how many people would believe that to be true.

I would have to disagree with this quote. The fact that we are small, and many are insignificant may be true, but it doesn't have to be like that. We shouldn't be restrained to bettering our corner of the world. We, as human beings, have an internal yearning to be significant. Usually things become more clear the more we age. As we are young, success is the primary focus. Then, as we grow older and success has or has not been fulfilled, we start to question our significance. We start to ask questions. Why are we here? What have I done to better the world? Have I made a difference? Evidence of this is the "mid-life crisis." There is something that happens when we reflect and come to terms with the fact that we have lived out half of our life. Urgency becomes more of a priority. Thus, significance comes to the frorefront of our thoughts rather than things such as success. With all that being said, we should not be limited to bettering our end of the world. We shouldn't be constrained. We should be encouraged. We should be encouraged to help and better every part of the world. Although one person "fixing" the whole world is unrealistic, it is not unrealistic to want to change a region tha is not your own. For example, although the US has its share of problems, insteaad of trying to better an amazing place, people should consider helping those in greater need. Better the place that needs it.

Dane Clark: Journal 5 - Reality Show

My reality television show premise would take place on the NPR music station. This network consists of all the classical, jazz, opera, and many world renowned artists into a public radio station. In this reality show, we give high quality musicians from the ages of 10 to 25 an opportunity to show their talent to the nation. First, you look on our website for the details and restrictions, and then apply. You fill out the online application, and look at all the audition requirements for your specific instrument (woodwind, brass, piano, voice…etc) for the prescreening audition recording. The prescreening audition requires you to send in a recording of yourself playing the various repertoire required for your instrument, and then to send it to the NPR station headquarters. Once accepted through the prescreening audition, we invite you to the NPR studio to audition and hear you play with a board of members and musicians of the highest quality. After your live audition, we then accept a finalist from each specific instrument and give a certificate, ten thousand dollars, and an opportunity to perform on NPR live to the world audience. Your future life as a musician will be changed dramatically. You’ll be wanted by audiences across the nation and world as you’ll soon be looked upon to perform in orchestral and solo venues. Your name will soon be known the world around you.

Dane Clark: Journal 6 - Roles of Men vs. Women

According to “Selling Out” and from looking in today’s media, men and women are portrayed completely different. Back in the roaring 1920s, when the media began to take a role in society, the men were considered the dominant, hardworking figure as women were seen as the subservient, household-family figure. In today’s society, the media portrays the stature of men lower than they did. Men are beginning to take on the role of the house provider as not all males getting the income for the household. Women are being presented as more the independent, powerful figures as they are taking roles of the business women. Examples of this are the movies “Big Daddy” and “Daddy Day Care,” as both the male spouses roles are the household provider and nurturer, as the woman is involved in the business world and work outside the home. Another difference on how men and women are objectified is that women have always been seen as iconic sex symbols (Marilyn Monroe, Playboy…etc). Many men have viewed woman with blonde hair and big boobs as a sex icon over the last couple of decades, and this superficial, annoying portrayal has still yet to change.

Dane Clark: Journal 7 - My Writing Style

Referencing to Vonnegut’s “How to Write with Style,” when I write, and I mean for anything such as e-mails, business letters, papers, or essays, I never think about my writing style. I don’t think you have to “think” about your voice or style, its just comes out. For instance, when you speak to someone, you don’t think about how you talk or sound, you just speak to communicate. Your voice, whether you think you have one or not, is there. It’s in you when you speak and it’s in you when you write. My voice doesn’t change when it comes to varying audiences. My style is something that I have created and is something that is a part of me. When writing, you’re conveying yourself to the “unknown audience.” There may be some nuances in my style, but it’s never changed to something that wouldn’t be me.
