Men and Women in the Media

Ever since I hit the age of 10, I had always looked at fashion and gossip magazines. I always enjoyed reading up on the latest celebrity gossip and finding out what all of the new trends were, but what I didn't realize was that I was embedding a "perfect image" of an "average" woman into my head. Looking back on how stupid I was for dieting and working out as much as I did for a 10 year old is absurd and the media can take thanks for that. Women have always been picked apart way more than men. In recent news Jessica Simpson put on a few pounds, who cares? In the media today, women are talked about much more frequently than men. Even though men still have to live up to a "standard" which the media does set for them, they are still not critiqued as harshly as women. Most men and women care about their figures and way they present themselves, some more than others. Both sexes will always be judged, I just feel that men have the easy way out especially with the media. Not assuming men don't care, but women tend to care more, hence why the media keys in on women with their fashion, boyfriend type, new lingo, etc. For example when Paris Hilton started saying "that's hot" how many times did you hear that on the street? Or when a celebrity wears a stunning dress to the Oscars, how many times was its remake googled or that celebrity's diet book purchased? On the otherhand men don't seem to go to those extremes.
