style

Whenever I am writing a paper or assignment for a class I rarely think about my own style as I’m writing. I do think about my audience and change my sentence structure and diction accordingly. If I’m writing a formal paper for a class I write mainly how I talk, just up two or three steps. I wouldn’t use all of my normal conversational words because it would not be formal or scholarly or appropriate for the given assignment. But if I am writing a letter or e-mail to friends or family I would write how I normally talk because I wouldn’t have to worry about it being graded and could just completely be myself. I think the reason I don’t really think about my style when I write is because, as Vonnegut said, the style that sounds the best and is most trusted is the writing style that sounds like you and comes naturally. It would be too hard to try to change your writing style because it would not come naturally.
