Selling Out

Women have been commoditized for centuries, and although men have started becoming commoditized in the last couple of decades, I don’t think that they are even close to reaching the level that women are at. Women are used way more in magazines and billboards to advertise products. The Media uses women’s bodies to make money because men are more likely to buy. Women pose naked to sell magazines to men, and now there are plenty of sites online. They are also more likely to appear naked in a movie and are under a lot of pressure to keep their bodies a certain way. This “certain way” is created by the media through magazines and movies by making it look like all men desire a woman who is tan, skinny, etc. Women who don’t achieve this standard usually suffer from depression and many hurt themselves by becoming anorexic. Although Men are also portrayed by the media as having six-packs and big muscular bodies, the pressure isn’t as big as it is for women so most men don’t suffer if they don’t look like that. This is probably due to the fact that men usually make the first move, so women have more pressure to look a certain way. Because of the media, the ideal image of a woman is instilled in a man’s head, and that is what most men seek.
